Maren Morris stopped to chat backstage at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 20), discussing her big win, her performance with Zedd and Grey and more.
Morris, who took home the statuette for the top country female artist category, said that winning was a surprise. “I was really shocked to win,” she told Billboard. “I wasn’t really expecting to. I come to these shows really just as a fan to sit in the crowd, in awe over other people’s performances, so that was a really cool thing to find out this morning.”
The singer also opened up about performing the song “The Middle” live for the first time at the show, revealing that she was “still coming down” from it. “It was so energetic and fun, lots of confetti – some of it got in my mouth as I was singing, but it was like the coolest performance I think I’ve gotten to do in my career and it just felt so alive.”
Asked how country musicians have reacted to her foray into pop music, Morris stated that they have been very supportive of her because country musicians are “just really loyal,” plus it’s a catchy song so they “can’t help but sing it in their heads.”
“Nashville has embraced it,” she continued. “It’s cool to kind of be in this realm of time where Florida Georgia Line and Bebe Rexha are doing this crossover, [Chris] Stapleton and [Justin] Timberlake and then me and Zedd and Grey, I mean, it’s kind of a clash of the genres in a really refreshing medium.”
