In less than 18 months, the guys of Lukas Graham have gone from no-names to nominees for two of the biggest Grammy honors an artist can receive: record of the year and song of the year for their hit “7 Years.”
On top of that, the song also received a nod for best pop duo/group performance, giving the Danish band three chances at winning the distinguished award — something they find pretty unbelievable.
“Winning a Grammy would mean everything to us. It’s a peer voting for peer selection process. Just that is pretty cool,” frontman Lukas Forchhammer says in an interview for Billboard‘s new Grammy video series. “A year ago, no one knew who we were, and now we’ve got three Grammy nominations on a quadruple-platinum single in America. Just being nominated is crazy enough for us right now. It’s hard to just fathom winning one — it’ll be too much.”
Forchhammer and his bandmates, bassist Magnus Larsson and drummer Mark Falgren, are all very aware that they have some tough competition (“7 Years” is up against the likes of Beyonce, Adele, Justin Bieber and The Chainsmokers, among others) and are the self-proclaimed “underdogs.” But while they say they aren’t going to expect anything, Forchhammer knows they created a song that’s impactful.
In addition to the relatable family themes and age progression of the song, “‘7 Years’ doesn’t sound like anything else out on the market right now,” he offers. “We spent a lot of time and effort and put it into this record. We spent about two and a half, three years on it. And maybe that’s what people can hear when they put the record on at home.”
Whatever happens, Forchhammer insists that simply receiving recognition and getting the chance to attend the awards is enough for them. “We’re not going to expect anything. We’re just happy to be there.”
