When Lorde appeared at Clive Davis’s pre-Grammy party last night in a full skirted, spaghetti strap Alex Perry gown atop a fitted white tee, it was a direct nod to the iconic ’90’s minimalist fashion wave. That’s precisely what Lorde’s stylist Karla Welch was going for.
Welch, who also works with Pink and Justin Bieber, had Lorde’s input when creating the look. “We were both in a ’90’s Party Girl vibe that day,” she tells Billboard exclusively. “We tried the dress on and Ella [Lorde’s real first name] said it would look amazing with a tee shirt. So we threw on this perfect tee by Vince and called it a day.”

In its heyday, the T-shirt under a dress combo was a favorite of Drew Barrymore and Alicia Silverstone, among others. In recent months, it’s been embraced by Rihanna and Kendall and Kylie Jenner, as well as on the runway at Courreges. And with Lorde reviving the style at one of the Grammys’ most esteemed pre-parties, 2017 may be the year it makes a full-on comeback.
