The audience at the 2019 American Music Awards was all too happy to oblige when Lizzo demanded they light up their phones and raise them high shortly after she made her entrance. “This light represents the love you have for yourself,” she declared. “So shine bright!”
Lizzo, in a gorgeous magenta tulle evening gown, proceeded to belt every single note of “Jerome” on a platform in the center of the AMA stage. She demonstrated exactly why she’s a contender in the categories for soul/r&b at this year’s ceremony, and was brought to her knees by her own sky-high notes by the end of the tune.
“Jerome” is off Lizzo’s 2019 album Cuz I Love You, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year.
Lizzo is nominated in three categories at this year’s AMAs: new artist of the year, favorite female artist – soul/r&b, favorite soul/r&b song (“Juice”).
