Lil Nas X caught up with Billboard on the red carpet at the 2020 Grammy Awards, chatting about his six Grammy nominations, his favorite memory with Billy Ray Cyrus, why he wanted to recruit DaBaby for a “Panini” remix, and what a collaboration with Kanye West might sound like.
Asked what the most rewarding part about receiving six Grammy nominations has been, Lil Nas X tells Billboard that he is just happy that people are still rooting for him, with whatever he does.
As for why he thinks Billy Ray Cyrus was the perfect partner for the “Old Town Road” remix, Lil Nas X says, “I feel like I’m like the youth and the hip-hop and he brings the country and the older generations, and we mash this together and everybody in the world loves it.”
Posed with the question of what his best experience with Cyrus was outside of recording music, he replies that he has a great time visiting the country icon’s farm. “It’s just amazing,” he says. “He has so many animals, ATVs I’m riding around on, it was just so fun.”
In the interview, Lil Nas X is also asked why he decided to recruit DaBaby for his “Panini” remix. “DaBaby is absolutely killing it,” he states. “He’s one of the biggest rappers right now. He has a perfect voice for rap, and I really like his music a lot.”
On the subject of collaborations, he is also asked what a potential Kanye West collaboration might sound like, to which he responds, “That record would sound like a soulful bop. It would be amazing.”
