Lauren Jauregui caught up with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet at the 2018 American Music Awards on Tuesday (Oct. 9), chatting about her new single, what she enjoys about being a solo artist, and her relationship with Ty Dolla $ign.
Speaking of her latest song “Expectations,” Jauregui tells Billboard that this is one of the first songs that she has been able to take control of when it comes to the creative process.
“’Expectations’ is an exploration of when you’re in a relationship with someone and you don’t want to have expectations,” she explains, “But they kind of get in the way, regardless, so it’s about that.”
Continuing the conversation about having creative control, the singer is asked what she gets to do now that she couldn’t do in Fifth Harmony. “I think just having creative agency and it being my vision that comes to life,” she replies, “And the trust that I have for my label and the way that they’ve fostered me doing me, I think that’s a brand new page, and I’m really excited about it.”
Jauregui is also asked if her debut solo album might be released in 2019, to which she responds with a smile, “Hopefully. Maybe!”
In the interview, the singer also chats about her relationship with Ty Dolla $ign. Asked what it is that makes their relationship work, she says, “I don’t know, we just vibe. We have fun together and he makes me laugh and he’s really sweet and thoughtful and kind and is just supportive.”
“There’s a million and one reasons why,” she continues. “Mostly, we are happy. When we’re hanging out, we’re just happy and vibing, and I don’t have to think about being happy, and I like that.”
