Billboard Music Awards host Kelly Clarkson spoke with Billboard’s Keith Caulfield on the red carpet ahead of the event on Sunday (May 20) to discuss The Voice, American Idol and her upcoming tour.
Asked what advice she gave The Voice contestant Brynn Cartelli ahead of the show’s finale, Clarkson says that she gave her the same advice she has been giving all of the contestants this season, which is to “have a good time.”
“She’s now made it to as far as you can on the show, if you win or not, it’s just the last two shows, regardless,” Clarkson continues. “She’s got a killer first single that we just recorded — Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels, Nick Monson and now Jesse Shatkin produced it, it’s a killer team and she did an amazing job and she’s performing it tomorrow, so — team Brynn for the win!”
Clarkson also discusses her former singing competition show American Idol and the fact that it will be airing opposite The Voice. “I think it’s all fun,” she says. “I don’t look at it like [competition], I guess cause I’m in both worlds, maybe, but I think it’s all fun. It’s all entertainment and it’s all people getting a shot at their dreams so nothing’s bad. And we have DVR, so you can do both!”
