Kacey Musgraves spoke with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs and Tetris Kelly on the pink carpet at the 13th annual Women in Music event, chatting about being the evening’s innovator award recipient, why she loves blending musical genres and more.
Speaking of receiving the innovator award honor, Musgraves tells Billboard that earlier today, she was trying to think about what an innovator is and what it means to her. “I just try to do what I do, and I want to make myself happy and do what feels right for me, and if that makes me an innovator, I’ll take it,” she says.
“But an innovator is someone who does something or takes creative risks, knowing that they might fail, but does it anyway,” she adds. “I appreciate anyone in music who can just do that, because that’s how we got all of our icons, our greats that we look up to today.”
Musgraves also discusses blending musical genres and what inspires her to do that. “A lot of things inspire me, but it all boils down to just real life,” she says. “Just life, living life, making mistakes. Just being a human… The thing about country music is that it’s about real life, and that’s my favorite part about the genre, so I like taking those things, taking real life and blending it into all these other influences I have.”
