Taking the Billboard Music Awards stage for the first time in her solo career tonight (May 21), Julia Michaels performed her breakout single “Issues.” Singing from a circular stage in the middle of the audience, Michaels gave a breathy, emotional performance of the current pop hit — nearly losing her voice altogether as she seemed to get choked up at the end — with a mini-string section plucking away behind her for backup.
“Issues” sits at no. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated May 27, after having previously peaked at No. 12. Michaels has previously hit the top ten as a songwriter on the Selena Gomez hits “Good for You” and “Hands to Myself,” and topped it altogether in early 2016 with her co-write on Justin Bieber’s “Sorry.”
