Jennifer Lopez is slated to receive ‘The People’s Icon of 2020’ award at the E! People’s Choice Awards on Nov. 15. The award will honor Lopez for her contributions to music, film, television, and fashion.
This has been a big year for Lopez, who was nominated for a Golden Globe (but not an Oscar) for her acclaimed performance in Hustlers. She was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy for outstanding variety special (live) for her headlining performance with Shakira at the Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show (Lopez’s first Emmy nomination).
Lopez also received a pair of Grammy nominations in 2000 and 2001 for “Waiting For Tonight” and “Let’s Get Loud.”
In addition, Lopez has picked up some honorary awards in recent years. In 2014, she received the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards. Four years later, she received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards.
“Jennifer Lopez has an unmatched global appeal and for more than two decades, has given us some of the most iconic, unforgettable performances of all time,” said Jen Neal, general manager, E! News, live events & lifestyle digital.
Neal also lauded Lopez for “single-handedly increasing Latinx representation in music, film, television, and fashion.”
Another famous Jennifer, Jennifer Aniston, received the People’s Icon award last year. Melissa McCarthy received it in 2018.
The E! People’s Choice Awards will be broadcast live from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. The nominations are due to be announced tomorrow (Oct. 1).
This will be the third year that E! has carried the show. The show originated on CBS in 1975 and remained on that network through 2017. Ratings for the annual event peaked in 1977, when the third People’s Choice Awards attracted 35.3 million viewers.
The E! People’s Choice Awards are produced by Den of Thieves with executive producers Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski.
Den of Thieves is the production company responsible for the MTV Video Music Awards for the past 13 years. It also holds executive producer credits for the MTV Movie Awards, the iHeartRadio Music Awards for Turner Broadcasting, E!’s “Live from the Red Carpet” awards season specials and Netflix’s “Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour” concert special.
