The Grammys love bringing artists of all genres together in unexpected combinations, so in a way it shouldn’t have been a surprise that the star of its tribute to 60 years of Motown music was, well, so surprising: Jennifer Lopez.
The “Dinero” singer blew through a dance-heavy medley of songs that included “Dancing in the Street” and “Please Mr. Postman,” with a little help from Smokey Robinson (who introduced the performance and sang bits of “I’ve Got Sunshine” and “My Girl”) and Ne-Yo (sitting behind the piano that Lopez climbed upon at the end of her performance).
Robinson previously defended the choice of J. Lo for the performance earlier this week: “I don’t think anyone who is intelligent is upset,” he told Variety. “Who’s stupid enough to protest Jennifer Lopez doing anything for Motown?”
Robinson will also host the concert special Motown 60: A Grammy Celebration, which will air April 21 on CBS and feature performances from Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Diana Ross and others.
