Dressed in a black satin tuxedo coat with flowing train and fluffy black bow tie, Hudson paid fitting tribute to the unstoppable sitting Supreme Court justice with her performance, wearing her very own version of a judicial robe. “I’ll Fight” — nominated Sunday night for best original song — was written for RBG by perennial Oscar nominee (but never winner) Diane Warren.
Hudson pulled out her trademark power vocals for her abbreviated take on the song, and Warren enthusiastically received the performance, furiously clapping from the crowd at the end.
Though Hudson isn’t nominated for “I’ll Fight” — best original song is a songwriter’s award only — she previously won an Oscar for her performance in 2006’s Dreamgirls. Earlier Sunday, RBG lost the Oscar for best documentary feature to Free Solo.
