The Grammy winner, who took the stage just before Normani, was introduced by the legendary Lenny Kravitz. “We’re in the presence of greatness” he said of both ladies, which set the tone for H.E.R.’s inspiring performance.
She began by posing in front of a backdrop that mimicked a magazine cover that had phrases like “Who decides real beauty” emblazoned on it.
H.E.R. then joined her backing live band to sing pure lyrics about loving oneself and not conforming to society’s standards. “Society is killing me softly,” she mused while being lifted above the stage. It was a moving performance for the singer’s VMAs debut.
Earlier this month, H.E.R. teamed up with Dram for their sultry duet “The Lay Down.” The singer will soon join one of her inspirations, Lauryn Hill, for a special one-night only performance at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 16.
