When Hayley Kiyoko spoke with Billboard backstage at the 2019 Women in Music event, she shared advice for women who might be struggling to find their self-worth, revealed the best piece of advice she’s received from her mother, and explained why having Tegan and Sara’s support means so much to her.
Asked to share some words of wisdom for any women who might be having a hard time finding their self-worth, Kiyoko told Billboard that women often put a lot of pressure on themselves and that they need to love themselves and know that they are worthy of love.
Kiyoko then revealed what the best piece of advice she received from her mother has been, noting that when life gets hard, her mother reminds her that happiness is hard work and that she needs to put in the work. “That always humbles me because then I don’t expect anything,” added Kiyoko. “It makes me work harder on myself and my self-love.”
In the interview, Kiyoko also honored two other important women in her life: Tegan and Sara. “I love them so much,” she said of the duo. “They mean so much to me because they’ve reached out and let me know that they love me and that they support me for who I am, and it’s meant so much to me.”
“They are kind, and intelligent, and hard-working, and they care about other artists just as much as themselves,” she continued. “I think that that is so powerful, and I’m very appreciative of their support.”
