Mai, who is nominated for a Grammy for best R&B album for her self-titled debut, is asked how it feels to be the only woman in that category. “It’s incredible — I feel honored, honestly, just to be in the category in general,” she replies.
“But to be the only woman… The moment that female R&B is having right now in the last two years or a year, it’s been really incredible, so I feel like if I am lucky enough to win, I feel like I’ll be taking it home for me, but I’ll be taking it home for all of us that are doing it as female R&B musicians, so I’m really excited.”
Asked what she thinks it says about the direction R&B is going in, based on the nominations, Mai notes that while it is always tricky and there are other female artists who deserved nominations in that category as well, she and her fellow female R&B artists are trying to make it more mainstream to see women in the genre.
“If I do get to win it, it’s also proof of what female R&B is doing right now,” she says. “But the guys are killing it, too.”
In the interview, Mai is also asked about a possible new Chris Brown collaboration. “I did speak to him the other day, and yes, we’re in talks,” she replies. “So, we’re gonna see, we’ll see.”
