Ahead of the arrival of today’s (Nov. 20) unveiling of the nominations for the 2020 Grammy Awards, fans of K-pop groups BTS and BLACKPINK waited in anticipation to see if their favorites would meet speculation and break through cultural boundaries to receive recognition from the Academy.
Alas, fans of each act expressed disappointment over social media in a response to their absence after nominations were announced.
Prior to the announcement, fans eagerly debated over social media what sort of potential categories the groups could get into: would BTS get recognized for album of the year with Map of the Soul: Persona, the best-selling album of the year? Or maybe the best music video of the year for “Boy with Luv” featuring Halsey? Would BLACKPINK, who recently became the first K-pop group to hit 1 billion views with a single music video on YouTube, get recognized as Best New Artist?
Filled with anticipation, fans discussed whether this would be the year the Academy, which now includes BTS’ members, would look to South Korea’s music scene and recognize the impact of artists coming out of it after years of the Grammys being accused of racism in its picks after changes to expand the Academy.
After the award nominations were announced, fans took to social media to discuss the Grammy snub of their faves, to share their thoughts. Meanwhile, BTS’ ARMY trended also trended “This Is BTS” in response, sharing some of that group’s accolades.
Check out some of the discourse below, including Halsey’s response to her collaborators being overlooked.

na not only did they string armys along but they strung bts along too. inviting them personally to the grammys, having them photographed by exclusive winner photographer, their suits placed in the grammy museum and allowed to become part of the recording academy.

Shall we rob the Grammy museum of bts suits like they robbed us..

blackpink achieved so much in 3 years of their career and being considered and acknowledged even for a grammy nomination by forbes, billboard and time magazine let alone is such a huge achievement itself, i’m proud of them

how is it that there are more articles talking abt bts not getting a grammy nomination than articles talking about those who ACTUALLY got nominated

BTS fans, let me tell the facts. They’ll never nominate BTS for #GRAMMYs or Album of the Year. The music isn’t in English and they are bias towards English artists. Grammys are insecure to let minority’s win. When was the last time you saw Asians win a Grammy? The show is rigged.

Remember what Drake said in last year’s grammy,
“If u have people singing your songs word for word, if ur a hero in your hometown,if people who have jobs are coming out in rain & snow to see ur show,u don’t need this You already won”#ThisIsBTS @BTS_twtpic.twitter.com/8D76XXZojz

deleting and ignoring all negativity. BTS deserved many nominations. I am however, unsurprised that they weren’t acknowledged. the US is so far behind on the whole movement. the time will come.
