Grace VanderWaal made her Billboard Music Awards debut this year, presenting alongside Julia Michaels on Sunday (May 20). Ahead of her appearance on the show, VanderWaal hit the red carpet to share what she was most excited about at her first BBMAs and candidly let fans in on a little secret: she’s one of Ariana Grande’s biggest fans.
Grande opened the show with a vibrant performance of her single “No Tears Left to Cry,” which happened to be the most-anticipated moment of the night for VanderWaal. But even though there was a chance she could run in to Grande backstage, VanderWaal admitted that meeting her idol may not end well.
“I want to meet her, but I don’t, because I know I’m gonna cry,” she laughed. “I just saw her brother — like, it’s not even her — and I started crying.”
After the fangirling, the 14-year-old shared her excitement for her upcoming opening slot for Imagine Dragons. “I’m most looking forward to knowing what it’s like to perform for arenas,” she said. “Obviously, I’m not that big, I’ve only ever performed at venues, so this will be super new for me and I’m really excited.”
