Florida Georgia Line caught up with Billboard’s Annie Reuter on the red carpet at the 2019 Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday (Apr. 7) to discuss their thoughts on mixing musical genres.
Asked to weigh in on the debate over whether or not Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” is considered to be country music, Brian Kelley tells Billboard, “Respectfully, I think that song’s way bigger than country music. I think if we sit here and try to figure out if it’s country or not, we miss the point of it being a great song.”
He adds that he loves the song and that the argument should not be over which genre it falls under, but instead people should just be talking about how great it is.
Tyler Hubbard shares similar sentiments, stating, “If you’re trying to put things in a box or in a genre, you’re just kind of wasting your time. If you like the song, play the song. If you don’t, then don’t.”
“We just kind of put our heads down and keep making music that we wanna listen to and that we love to write and that we love performing,” he continues. “And the fans are connecting with it, and that’s really a special thing for us. We get to do what we love, and we never have been worried about what box it fits in or doesn’t fit in.”
