Daley took to Twitter on Monday (Feb. 29) to really clear the air and clarify his statements before, saying that he was only trying to be funny — “in defense of history.”

Black followed up, explaining his comment from earlier that if Smith doesn’t know who he is “it may be time to stop texting my fiancé.” He said that Smith and his fiancé, British Olympian Tom Daley, are pals and text.

While accepting his Academy Award on Sunday night Smith had erroneously claimed he may be the first openly gay Oscar winner, which he learned later is untrue. Black, as well as Elton John and Melissa Etheridge, are also in that club.
The “Writing’s On The Wall” singer later responded to the fact checkers, saying, “My point was to shine some light on the LGBT community who I love so dearly.”
