Daddy Yankee caught up with Billboard on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards on Sunday (Jan. 28) to chat about how the success of “Despacito” has changed his life, his new single “Dura” and the possibility of working with Luis Fonsi and Justin Bieber again.
Speaking of how “Despacito” has impacted his life, Daddy Yankee says it has “changed my career in every way. I traveled to countries that I’ve never been before, and watching the world singing in my language, it’s just a blessing.”
Asked about the most unexpected place he has ever heard the song played, he says that he has even heard “Despacito” played in Africa and Israel. “I’ve been in Israel, and [it is] definitely a great country, and watching them enjoying the music, it was really cool.”
Daddy Yankee also discussed his new single, “Dura,” sharing that it reminds him of “the essence of our genre since the early ’90s,” adding that it takes inspiration from Panama, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. “I think that’s the thing that captures everybody’s ear,” he says.
