Dan + Shay brought their heartfelt ballad “Speechless” to the 2019 CMA Awards in the most eloquent fashion possible: Coordinating black and white tuxedos and a full orchestra. And yes, it was as incredible as that sounds.
The country duo put Shay Mooney’s powerful vocals and Dan Smyers’ seamless harmonies in the spotlight as they sat side by side at the center of the stage, with Mooney sporting a white suit coat and Smyers in black. They took their powerful performance up a notch with a full orchestra, making the passionate love song even more romantic.
Though “Speechless” lost to Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country” for song of the year just prior to Dan + Shay’s performance, the pair didn’t seem phased by the loss as they took the stage and belted out their hit. Perhaps that’s because Dan + Shay were also up for three other awards throughout the night, including vocal duo of the year, album of the year and song of the year. Song of the year went to Luke Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy,” but Dan + Shay still came out victorious later in the night, when they were awarded duo of the year.
