Country duo Dan + Shay caught up with Billboard’s Kevan Kenney on the red carpet at the 53rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday to chat about the success of their song “Tequila” and why the ACM Awards are so special to them.
Asked why they chose to release “Tequila” as the first taste of what’s to come on their forthcoming studio album, Dan Smyers says that while it was a tough call and that they have a large selection of songs that they are really proud of, the song “felt representative of Dan + Shay, what we do best. We felt like it elevated the game lyrically and production-wise, and Shay’s vocals on it are just ridiculous.”
“Our internal crew — our wives — they’re the A&Rs of our records,” Smyers jokes. “They love that song and it just felt like it had something to it. But we never expected the reaction that it’s gotten…It’s really cool.”
The pair also discuss why the ACM Awards are so meaningful to them, including the fact that Shay Mooney took his wife to the event on one of their first dates. “Just to be invited to this thing, it’s such a big deal,” he adds. “It’s a huge night in country music and not only to be nominated and to be invited and get to actually sit in there with all of the people that we love, it’s amazing to perform. We’re so excited about that. To get that was huge.”
