Cyndi Lauper spoke with Billboard on the red carpet at Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Gala on Saturday (Jan. 25), discussing why it’s so important for women to support other women in the music industry, and which new musical artists she’s most excited about.
Asked what can be done to help protect women in the music industry, Lauper tells Billboard, “Well that’s a big question. There’s a big answer too … I think that eventually the playing field has to be leveled and I think that for women, you have to start to reach out to other women and work with women and that’s how you even it out.”
“I try and do both,” she continues. “I’ve worked with men all my life, but when I can work with a woman, I’m very excited to. I’m always tired of being the only women in the room.”
Lauper is also asked which emerging female musical artists are inspiring her the most at the moment, to which she names Brandi Carlile as an artist she has always liked. She also mentions Billie Eilish, as well, and says that Lizzo makes her laugh. Lauper also says that she’s rooting for her friend Catherine Russell to take home the Grammy for best jazz vocal album for Alone Together.
