Hip-hop star/actor Common rocked Dolce & Gabbana at the 2016 Oscars. The presenter (who won best original song last year with John Legend for “Glory” from Selma) sported a sleek, white D&G tuxedo with a black bow tie.
The white dinner jacket and tuxedo look has been a red-carpet favorite this season (especially at the Grammy Awards, with Justin Bieber and Big Sean wearing the look) and Sunday with Oscars host Chris Rock wearing a Burberry shawl-collar version.

“When you are dressing for the Academy Awards, the most glamorous night in film, you better bring your game,” says Micaela Erlanger, the star’s longtime stylist. “There was something very Cary Grant about the all-white look.”
Erlanger accented Common’s tux with studs, cufflinks and a watch, plus a diamond lapel pin, all from Fred Leighton. “I love a jabot or brooch on a man, theres’ something so elegant. And men’s jewelry — when done correctly — can really accent a look,” she explains. The pin, a platinum-and-diamond version with a cluster of three stars, is a vintage collector’s item from the Art Deco era, designed by Suzanne Belperron. “I love the whimsy of it. It has history and tells a story.” It also isn’t the first time the rapper has worn men’s jewelry: He wore a similar antique pin at the 2015 Oscars.

To finish the luxe ensemble, Erlanger added a pair of insouciant black velvet slippers by Paul Andrew. “Paul’s designs have been a favorite of mine for female clients, and now he’s going to be a favorite for my men,” the stylist says of the designer, who just introduced men’s footwear at New York Fashion Week: Men’s earlier this month. “The velvet loafer was perfect for the look.”
