Cher received the prestigious Icon award at Sunday’s (May 21) Billboard Music Awards — previously given to such luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Lopez and Prince — and performed her Hot 100-topping 1999 smash “Believe.”
Legend that she is, though, Cher stuck around for a second performance, of 1989 career-reinventing smash “If I Could Turn Back Time.” The pop great took it back to her late-’80s look, with the big hair, leather jacket and revealing fishnet outfit, for a soaring, note-perfect rendition of her mid-period smash.
In her recent cover story for Billboard, Cher admitted that she didn’t much care for her older hits, explaining “I’m not a Cher fan… I just don’t think my aesthetic taste lies in her direction.” However, she made an exception for “Turn Back Time,” as well as her other late-’80s ballads, adding that “by that time, I figured out I wasn’t going to ever be the Eagles.”
Watch her performance of the classic power ballad here when it becomes available.
