Advertised as the biggest performance in the show’s history, Carrie Underwood performed her recent single “Southbound” from in front of Nashville’s Parthenon museum on Wednesday night (June 5) at the 2019 CMT Music Awards.
Wearing multi-colored geometric earrings, a fuchsia skirt and a top with Office Space levels of flair, Carrie led the massive, glowstick-carrying crowd in front of the Parthenon in a spirited version of her upbeat single. The look and energy of the performance was closer in nature to a Katy Perry show than what you’d usually expect from the “Queen of Country” at an awards show.
Carrie Underwood is also one of the big winners of the evening at the time of her performance, taking home the trophy for best female video for her hit anthem “Love Wins” and video of the year for the title-track lead single to her Billboard 200-topping 2018 album Cry Pretty. “Southbound” currently lies at No. 30 on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart.
