The 2020 CMA Awards were a wild ride before they even started. While Carly Pearce was scheduled to perform “I Hope You’re Happy Now” with Lee Brice, her duet partner on the song, Brice tested positive for COVID-19 and was removed from the lineup before the broadcast.
Charles Kelley of Lady A gamely stepped up to fill his shoes, and, well, it was a good thing his performance with Pearce was pre-taped. While Kelley and Pearce were able to take the stage for a pre-recorded run-through of the Country Airplay No. 1 hit, by the time the CMA Awards aired Wednesday (Nov. 11), Kelley had to drop out from the proper ceremony because someone in Lady A’s circle had tested positive for COVID-19.
