The Brit Awards announced on Friday (Sept. 24), that their next ceremony will be held on Feb. 8, 2022, at The O2 arena in London. The following year’s air date places United Kingdom’s premier music awards show back in its usual February timing. The Brits have aired in February in all but two years since they relaunched in 1982: In 2000, The Brit Awards aired on March 3, and last year’s Brit Awards was delayed to May 11 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Brits also announced on Friday that Polydor co-president, Tom March, is taking over as chair of the Brit committee for 2022 under Universal Music UK’s third year at the helm.
At this year’s show, Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia won British album of the year and Harry Styles’ “Watermelon Sugar” won British single. Both titles had also won at the 63rd annual Grammy Awards on March 14. The 2022 Brits will also follow the 2022 Grammy Awards, which will air on Jan. 31.
The Brits had just 11 categories last year, compared to 84 awards at the Grammys. (The Grammys have announced that they will have two more categories next year, upping their total to 86.) The Brits’ telecast ran a taut 108 minutes, compared to three and a half hours for the Grammys.
The BRIT Awards 2022 with Mastercard — which is the show’s official name — will be broadcast exclusively on ITV for the 29th consecutive year. The Brits’ long-standing partnerships with Mastercard (24 years) and The O2 arena (12 years) will also continue.
The Brits are looking for a new host. Comedian Jack Whitehall, who has hosted the Brits the last four years, announced that he is stepping down due to U.S. filming commitments.
