The 2019 CMT Music Awards included a stirring show of female empowerment in its final hour, as Brandi Carlile and Tanya Tucker joined forces to lead some of country’s most prominent female artists in a rendition of Tucker’s legendary 1972 hit “Delta Dawn.”
The performance was pegged to the lack of women being represented on country radio, a recurring topic in Nashville, and for the duet, Carlile and Tucker were joined by some of the artists who have made strides for women across the industry’s recent history: Carly Pearce, RaeLynn, Martina McBride, Deana Carter, Trisha Yearwood and Lauren Alaina.
The powerful rendition ended with Tucker hitting that final note as the chorus cheered her on, and Carlile introducing the many talents who had joined her onstage. Members of the audience, including Keith Urban, were shown standing and cheering on the collective during the performance.
Earlier this week, Tucker announced that While I’m Livin’, her first album in 17 years, is due out in August. Carlile, in turn, won a trio of Grammy Awards earlier this year for her 2018 full-length By the Way, I Forgive You.
