In honor of the 2017 American Music Awards, Billboard is counting down the best performances from the awards show’s history. Here is No. 4.
More recently, Billy Gilman came in second place to Sundance Head in Season 11 of NBC’s The Voice. Fifteen years before that, he was a 13-year-old kid singing his single “One Voice” at the 2001 AMAs. “One Voice” had peaked a year earlier at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Before his AMAs performance, Gilman was introduced as “the youngest artist to ever have a Platinum album on the country charts.” A pint-sized Gilman starts to sing in a boyish voice and black leather jacket. Between verses, the young Gilman can’t help but grin.
A quaint performance featuring Gilman bobbing up and down on stage leads up to him nailing and holding out a mega-note that coaxes the crowd to give him a standing ovation.
Gilman returned to the stage later that night to accept his award for Favorite Country New Artist.

The 2017 American Music Awards will broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
