Billie Eilish spoke with Billboard on the red carpet at the 2020 Grammy Awards, chatting about what fans can expect from her new documentary, how writing on the road is different from writing at home, and why she feels it is important to be open about mental health.
Asked if she plans to watch her new documentary before it’s released, Eilish tells Billboard, “I hope so ’cause I better get some say in what’s in it and what’s not! Dude, they have filmed some stuff that I’m like, ‘Please don’t put that in there,’ like, just me being annoying or whatever. But yeah, I’ll watch it. I’ll watch it, for sure. I’m excited.”
As for whether or not there’s anything in there that fans don’t already know about her? Eilish says there is “hella s—t.”
In the interview, Eilish also discusses how it feels to be writing music with her brother Finneas for her next album on the road, as opposed to writing music in her parents’ house.
“It used to feel really different, but I think now it’s pretty the same, all around,” she replies. “It really feels genuine and natural when we work together. I think for a while it was, like, we only could make music in our house, in the bedroom that we grew up in and now I feel like we’re at this place where it’s like we could just do it anywhere…It feels good, it feels good. I’m ready to go on tour and make an album. I’m ready and I’m excited.”
Posed with the question of what her goals are for 2020, the “Bad Guy” singer notes that while she has a lot of goals, they are mostly goals within herself.
“I realized a couple months ago that I’m in the period of my life that I’m gonna miss, I think,” she explains. “Life is kinda perfect for me right now, to be honest with you, and I feel like I can say that now because it wasn’t for a really long time and now I’m not lying.”
On the subject of mental health, Eilish is asked why she feels it is important to be open about her own mental health. “I just share what I feel like I would wanna hear and I think people are really ignorant about mental health and about age with mental health,” she replies.
“I think people think that a lot of younger people can’t be upset about life and I think that’s super wrong and I wanna teach the world…You gotta do what is right for you. I’m not gonna tell you to go tell everybody how you feel and I’m not gonna tell you to not tell anybody…Whatever you feel is the right thing for you, you gotta do that for yourself. Whatever makes you happy, that’s all you gotta do. Don’t listen to anybody else.”
