After an intro from an airborne, umbrella-toting Keegan-Michael Key, Bette Midler took the stage at the 2019 Oscars to perform the understated Mary Poppins Returns ballad “The Place Where Lost Things Go.”
As red umbrellas levitated and glowed in the background, the Divine Miss M crooned the tune accompanied by Marc Shaiman on piano, who co-wrote the song with Scott Wittman. Both are nominated for the 2019 best original song Oscar for the affecting composition.
Midler has been twice nominated for best actress in the course of her lengthy career. She performed “Wind Beneath My Wings” at the 2014 Oscars during the In Memoriam segment.
