With a serrated vocal fade-in from Alabama Shakes’ leader Brittany Howard, the band delivered its hit “Don’t Wanna Fight” to the Grammys stage. On a night with highlights including a show-stopping performance from Kendrick Lamar and a medley tribute to David Bowie from Lady Gaga, Howard and the Shakes delivered a rare taste of guitar-driven rock and roll with their taut take on rocked-out soul.
Shakes received three awards at the time of their performance; Best Alternative Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for the band’s second studio album Sound & Color (also nominated for Album of the Year) Best Rock Song for “Don’t Wanna Fight.”
In December Howard accepted the Powerhouse award at Billboard’s Women In Music 2015 event — watch her performance of “Joe” here.
