18-time Grammy nominee and 12-time Grammy award winner Adele is performing at Sunday night’s Grammy’s, but before taking the stage, the songstress stepped out on the red carpet wearing a green Givenchy gown. Billboard spoke exclusively to Adele’s stylist, Gaelle Paul, about choosing the legendary look below.
What went into the process of selecting this look?
In the summer, I looked at the Haute Couture shows online. I was looking at styles, fabrics, techniques from different designers, trying to see what might be great for a gown. Sometimes it’s a hint of what I see, sometimes it’s the whole look.
I will then reach out to the fashion houses that we like and they will then send me sketches they propose for her with my comments in mind. We go back and forth and tweak until perfect. The final couple of sketches are sent over with swatches and that’s when a gown is decided.
How did her looks at previous Grammys play into the thinking for this year’s appearance?
I was thrilled with the Givenchy gowns last year. They, of course, had to be different this year in terms of shape, colour and even the use of different techniques. Last year they were beautifully beaded; this year, there is a lot of hand pleating and embroidery.

What do you love about this look?
I love that is it a show of true workmanship and art. I love that designers can showcase handmade couture dresses on the red carpet, other wise we would so rarely see the dresses and this lost art. It is a time to celebrate art and fashion.
What makes it the perfect dress for such a special evening?
It is an amazing military green, so beautiful. I think this is special. It is the right amount of modern and the past, feminine and power.
