Can you handle one more music awards show this week? The inaugural Song Breaker Awards will stream on TikTok on Saturday (March 13), one day before the 63rd annual Grammy Awards air on CBS.
The Song Breaker Awards, which are presented by Logitech in collaboration with TikTok, recognize creators who are influencing pop music through dance challenges, memes and trends that they’ve started and shared on social media, especially TikTok.
Latinx TikTok star Sienna Mae Gomez and social media star Larray will co-host the show, which will feature an appearance by two-time Grammy winner Lil Nas X. The show will also feature a performance by rapper and songwriter 24kGoldn, whose “Mood” (featuring Iann Dior) topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks.
“Ahead of the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, music’s biggest night, we’re excited to celebrate creators who have played a role in skyrocketing songs to record-breaking success and award nominations through dance, memes and challenges on TikTok,” said Meridith Rojas, Logitech’s head of global creator marketing, in a statement.
Logitech is honoring 14 creators in three categories. The nominees consist of “originators,” creators who start the trends, dances and challenges; “amplifiers,” popular creators who are responsible for amplifying the challenges to their audiences; and “artist breakers,” emerging artists whose music broke big because of its popularity on TikTok. During the show, winners in these three categories will be announced, as well as winners of the breakthrough award, groundbreaker award and song breaker of the year.
The 2021 Song Breaker Award honorees include show hosts Larray and Gomez; 24kGoldn; Surf Mesa, whose “ily (i love you baby)” (featuring Emilee) brought the timeless 1967 classic “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” back to the top 30 hit on the Hot 100; Haley Sharpe, who is credited with creating the dance to Doja Cat’s “Say So”; and Keara Wilson, who created the “Savage” challenge to Megan Thee Stallion’s smash of the same name. “Say So” and “Savage” (featuring Beyoncé) both reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 and are Grammy nominees for record of the year.
Other honorees include Avani Gregg, Brian Esperon, Cale “Cowboy Cale” Saurage, Curtis Waters, Jalaiah Harmon, Madi Monroe, Michael Le and Tia Bee Stokes.
The final list of nominees was selected in collaboration with TikTok.
Lil Nas X, a creative collaborator with Logitech, credits the TikTok community with helping his now 14-times platinum “Old Town Road” first reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “I was promoting ‘Old Town Road’ using memes and the song was already moving, but once it got on TikTok and it was trending, that was it,” he said.
“Lil Nas X is one of the first bonafide breakout TikTok stars, and it’s been a pleasure to witness his success as an artist, a true testament to the power of the TikTok community’s connection to music,” said Isabel Quinteros Annous, who works in music partnerships and artist relations at TikTok.
The Song Breaker Awards is a program from Castle, Logitech’s creators’ club, which aims to champion creators, embrace the creator community and power change. Gomez will join Lil Nas X as a founding Castle member.
The Song Breaker Awards show will stream on TikTok on March 13 from 5 to 6 p.m. PT from @logitech, @siennamae and @larrayeeee.
