Laura Dern found herself to be the recipient of an unexpected, but hilarious, musical tribute at the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, Calif., Saturday night (Feb. 8).
During the ceremony, host Aubrey Plaza spoke of the importance of LGBTQ representation in film, which led to bringing the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles onstage to highlight the “gayest moments in films that you may not have realized were gay.”
Jennifer Lopez pole dancing to Fiona Apple in Hustlers, Frank Ocean‘s music in Waves and Renee Zellweger’s press tour for Judy all made the cut, but the true star of the choir’s song was Dern — notably, her performance in Marriage Story.
“Did this…really happen? Thank you @GMCLA @filmindependent and @JTfirstman for making me realize how much I need a choir to go everywhere with me!” the actress wrote on Twitter Saturday night (Feb. 8).
See the performance (and Dern’s reaction) below.
