The nominations for the 72nd Emmy Awards were announced on Tuesday (July 28). It didn’t take long before the onscreen talent and those behind the scenes making the magic happen celebrated the recognition of their hard work with messages on social media and to Billboard.
And in singer and This Is Us star Mandy Moore’s case, she offered cheers to not only colleagues who received nominations, but to her own spouse as well. “SO proud of our #thisisus team on the Emmy love,” tweeted the actress, who did not receive a nom. “The unstoppable force that is @SterlingKBrown, Ron Cephas Jones, Phylicia Rashad, our hair department led by Michael Reitz and @SiddKhoslaMusic + my husband @dawestheband on their nomination for best original song!” Moore’s husband Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes wrote the song “Memorized” for an episode of the hit NBC show she stars on alongside Brown, who was nominated for lead actor in a drama.
HBO’s Watchmen topped the nominations list with 26, while Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was second with 20. In third were Netflix’s Ozark and HBO’s Succession, which both earned 18.

Although this Emmy nomination comes with enormous gratitude, it would be disingenuous of me to say that it isn’t bittersweet. I am nothing in #IKnowThisMuchIsTrue without Derek Cianfrance who has made a piece of work that will stand the test of time…#Emmys pic.twitter.com/PSnTf9yB05

As for his own nominations? “Are you kidding me? Two nominations? YES, YES!”
“Thank goodness for the mute feature on Zoom because we may have blown out some ears cheering for team Maisel this morning,” say Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore, who were nominated for music and lyrics. “Writing songs for Maisel and collaborating with the A-Team of craftspeople who make this gorgeous, funny and smart show was already the gift of a lifetime — so to be recognized by our music peers alongside some of our musical idols is truly overwhelming. … We are now going to raise a glass together to this crazy year, via Zoom, and try not to spill it on our laptops.”
“We are absolutely thrilled to be nominated for the music of Ozark, and honored to be among such a talented group of composers,” say Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, who were nominated for music for a series. “A huge thank you to Jason Bateman for bringing us on board and the whole production crew for making this such an amazing show. We’d like to thank our music team, and specifically our long time collaborator and team leader Chase Deso, who has been an integral part of the Ozark score since day one.”
“Of all mornings I slept in today after working late last night and discovered tons of missed calls and text messages. My first Emmy nomination! I’m thankful to James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte, the masterminds behind McMillions, HBO and to my amazing team, most of all, Alex Kovacs.”
“I am honored to be nominated by the Television Academy alongside such talents. Little Fires Everywhere is a show about mothers and daughters. About being a woman. About letting go and growing. “I am thrilled, shocked and elated to have received two Emmy nominations this morning for the music for Why We Hate. I hope that as a result of these nominations, this incredibly prescient series will become even more a part of the public consciousness,” says Laura Karpman, who was nominated for music for a documentary series and main title theme music. “We need to root out hatred in this fragile world of ours. Thank you Geeta Gandbhir, Sam Pollard, Alex Gibney and Steven Spielberg for this amazing collaboration. And thank you to all of the incredible musicians who lent their voices to the music.”
“Delighted to receive a nomination for my dutiful service to The Crown. Carrying on its legacy was a tough ask, but a rewarding one,” says Martin Phipps, who was nominated for original music for a series. “Also honored to be included alongside such talent as Britell, Goransson & Labrinth. What an awesome line up this year! Congrats to the other nominees for The Crown including the amazing Peter Morgan.”
“I just heard the good news about the Emmy nomination for Better Call Saul music supervision as I am waking up from my return from a two-week COVID-19-dodging RV road trip through national parks and campgrounds in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Arizona,” says Thomas Golubic. “What a lovely bit of news to celebrate over my first home-made espresso!”
“Wow! Such fantastic news to be nominated for my work on Season 3 of Stranger Things. My Stranger Things family raises the bar yet AGAIN for the 3rd season!” exclaims Nora Felder to Billboard when she heard about her nod for music supervision. “It’s truly an honor to be a part of the shows main silent characters. The music!”
