The nominees for the 91st Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning (Jan. 22) in Los Angeles by The Big Sick star Kumail and black-ish‘s Tracee Ellis Ross. A Star is Born was among the leading nominees with eight nods, including for Lady Gaga as best actress, Bradley Cooper for best actor, Sam Elliott for supporting actor Cooper again for best adapted screenplay, as well as best cinematography and sound mixing nominations, best picture and Gaga and Mark Ronson for best original song for “Shallow.”
Alfonso Cuaron’s emotional black and white semi-autobiographical tale of his childhood Roma and the costume drama The Favourite lead all nominees with 10 nods, followed by the Dick Cheney biographical film Vice. Other multiple nominees include Black Panther (7) — the first comic book movie to ever earn a best picture nom — Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman (7) and Black Panther (7) and the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody (5).
Gaga and Cooper’s show-stopper duet on “Shallow,” will compete against “All the Stars,” Kendrick Lamar and SZA‘s contribution to the Black Panther soundtrack, as well as Diane Warren’s “I’ll Fight” for RBG, performed by Jennifer Hudson; “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns, sung by actress Emily Blunt and David Rawlings and Gillian Welch’s “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, performed by Tim Blake Nelson and Willie Watson.
