The American Music Awards keeps getting bigger with every passing year, from the unforgettable performances to surprise guests.
For the 2019 ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night (Nov. 24), the celebrities not only stepped up their game on the Microsoft Theater’s stage — but also on the red carpet.
There was a fun mix of get-ups, including neon suits, classic gowns and eye-catching headpieces. From newcomers like Megan Thee Stallion to veterans like Carrie Underwood, Billboard rounded up all of the spectacular outfits from this year’s festivities.
10. Megan Thee Stallion
Megan The Stallion has kept her mantra ablaze even throughout the colder months, and the AMAs was yet another display of just how sultry the “Hot Girl Summer” rapper could be. She looked elegant in a floor-length red dress, which sparkled with an array of sequins. She gave the Jessica Rabbit-inspired look a modern twist with long nails, sultry soft-glam makeup and cascading curls.
One of this year’s biggest rebrands was Diplo going country, and the superstar producer stayed in character on the red carpet. He opted for a more subdued look, sporting a custom camel MCM suit with black leather detailing. In true country fashion, Diplo also rocked a cowboy hat, pointed-toe boots, dark shades and a fistful of rings.
Lizzo embodied her inner Supreme as she walked the red carpet in a ’60s-inspired getup. Her creamsicle-colored ruffled minidress was absolutely adorable, which perfectly matched her monochromatic makeup and vintage high ponytail. And her best accessory? That inexplicably tiny purse!
7. Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood looks every bit of country royalty — and it was all thanks to her sequin-filled eggplant gown. The “Cry Pretty” singer had a balance of girly and edgy with her signature sleek blonde hair, metallic gold platform sandals and bronze makeup.
Before stepping on stage as tonight’s host, Ciara certainly brought the most in the form of a bold look on the carpet. She rocked a bright, royal blue pantsuit with an oversized blazer and flared trousers. Her accessories included a bejeweled turquoise bra harness with matching earrings, nude-colored nails and flowing brunette waves.
Kesha made her grand return to the AMAs by rocking head-to-toe Versace: a robe, skin-tight boots and a hefty amount of matching gold jewelry. The “Raising Hell” singer looked fresh out the shower with her wet-look wavy hair and minimal makeup that highlighted her cat-like eyes.
4. Billy Porter
Billy Porter absolutely stuns on any red carpet he comes across, and this year’s AMAs was no different! The Pose star immediately caught the cameras’ eyes with his all-white Thom Browne ensemble topped with an artistic headpiece. But there were a few peakaboo details that added a subtle political message. “I’m wearing hints of red, white and blue because I’m an American,” Porter tweeted. “And this is what we look like.”
Halsey continues to experiment with her red carpet looks and her latest one was quite the showstopper. The night’s winner for favorite pop/rock song for “Without Me” wore a floor-sweeping floral gown that revealed lilac, peach, light blue and pink colors as it flowed on the carpet. But the alternative-leaning singer made sure not to make things too girly. Her eye makeup resembled a painting with its abstract pattern and her hair was done in a cool top knot.
2. Post Malone
Let’s face it: Post Malone really knows how to rock a suit! The artist (who took home the award for favorite rap album for Hollywood’s Bleeding) looked ever so sharp with a black-and-white plaid three-piece suit. It was complete with dots of black nail polish on his fingers (in true “Rockstar” fashion), alligator boots and a playful wide-brimmed hat with “Post Malone” written on it, naturally.
1. Lil Nas X
Lil Nas X‘s star power in the fashion world is ascending just as rapidly as his music career. The artist, whose “Old Town Road” remix with Billy Ray Cyrus took home the award for favorite rap song, captured everyone’s attention with his neon-green zoot suit. If the color wasn’t loud enough, Lil Nas X also rocked a zebra-patterned shirt and gloves. A lot of people can have bold fashion choices, but he’s an example that you also need to have the unapologetic confidence to match.
