Cardi B won album of the year for her debut, Invasion of Privacy. She also took best female hip-hop artist for the second year in a row. Nipsey Hussle, who died on March 31, took best male hip-hop artist for the first time. He also won a special humanitarian award.
Here are 10 other records that were set at the 19th annual BET Awards, which were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Childish Gambino‘s “This Is America” took video of the year. The explosive clip won the Grammy for best music video in February. It’s only the third video to win both of these awards, following Pharrell Williams‘ “Happy” (201) and Beyoncé’s “Formation” (2016).
Snoop Dogg took the best gospel/inspirational award for “Blessing Me Again” (featuring Rance Allen). Snoop is the first artist who is known primarily for secular music to win in this category as a lead artist. He’s the second hip-hop artist to win in this category. The first was Lecrae, who is a three-time winner in the category.
Lil Baby won best new artist, which boosts his chances of being nominated in that category at the 62nd Grammy Awards. The last two BET winners in this category—Chance the Rapper and SZA—received Grammy noms for best new artist. (Chance won.)
Ella Mai‘s “Trip” won the Coca-Cola viewers’ choice award. This is the fourth year in a row that an unassisted female artist (with no featured acts) has won this award. The English soul singer follows Beyoncé, who won with “Formation” (2016) and “Sorry” (2017) and Cardi B who won last year with “Bodak Yellow.”
Drake, who was second only to Cardi B for most noms this year (he had five, to her seven) won just one award—for his featured role on Travis Scott‘s “Sicko Mode,” which won best collaboration. It’s Drake’s 14th BET award. Drake is just one award away from tying Chris Brown for the most wins ever by a male solo artist. Brown has amassed 15 BET Awards.
Spike Lee‘s BlacKkKlansman won best movie. The film was nominated for best picture at the Oscars in February, but lost to Green Book. This is the third year in a row that the BET winner for best movie was an Oscar nominee for best picture. Hidden Figures and Black Panther were also Oscar finalists.
Regina King, who won an Oscar in February for If Beale Street Could Talk, won her second BET award for best actress. King is the first actress to win both an Oscar and a BET award in the same year since Lupita Nyong’o won both awards five years ago for 12 Years a Slave. Michael B. Jordan, the star of Black Panther and Creed II, won his second BET award for best actor.
Mary J. Blige won a lifetime achievement award. Blige won best female R&B/pop artist at the inaugural BET Awards in 2001. She won again in that category in 2006.
