Get ready to start listening to a lot of Waxahatchee. Or maybe you have already — Katie Crutchfield’s band is prepping its third studio album and Ivy Tripp is primed to be one of the year’s most talked-about indie rock releases. The singer-songwriter stopped by Billboard’s New York office to chat about the new record, which drops April 7 on Merge.
It’s Waxahatchee’s first album for a big indie label like Merge (after previous releases on Don Giovanni and Wichita) so Katie explained to us how they hooked up, and what it’s been like working with a much busier schedule. Even with higher stakes, rest assured the honest, personal songwriting that marked Katie’s D.I.Y. days hasn’t left us.

“In the back of my mind I always wanted it to be Merge,” she says. “I had a couple of mutual friends with (Superchunk members and Merge co-founders) Mac (McCaughan) and Laura (Ballance) and they were all putting that out there to them. Superchunk asked us to come on tour with them and when I finished the record I sent it to Mac. He liked it and the rest is history.”
She also told us what it’s been like to play in a band with her sister (Swearin’s Allison Crutchfield) once again.
