Sophie B. Hawkins dropped by Soul Sisters a week before her debut at New York’s Café Carlyle to talk about her new music, imminent move to Brooklyn, relationship changes, parenting challenges and — yes — those early hits that defined early adolescence for many a ’90s child.
Listen as Hawkins breaks down the raw reality behind her early success (“My spirit of creativity was so bashed on the rocks again and again and again”), how she learned to open herself back up to inspiration (“Stopping and being just alive is the key”), and how she’s feeling about herself this Pride month. “I think that as a single, amazing woman, that I’m the catch of the century!” she laughs.
Listen to the full episode below, hosted by Jessie Katz and Darah Golub, which includes a live performance in the Billboard office of “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover,” and catch Hawkins’ run at the Café Carlyle from June 27 to 29. And be sure to subscribe to the Soul Sisters iTunes channel for all upcoming episodes!
