Canadian artist Lights joined Soul Sisters to tell us how she pushed herself to learn comic book writing so she could create a visual accompaniment to her new album, Skin & Earth, and how, in her illustrated alter ego, “It took this fictional character for me to be authentic.”
Speaking of women finding their authentic selves, we also dig into the challenges of raising a three-year-old daughter in a culture that discourages girls from pursuing certain careers or interests.
“Young girls aren’t marketed science-y stuff, or techy stuff, or even musical stuff,” she says. “Role models are important and if you see it you can be it.”
“It has to start with individual creators and then eventually I think it will change on a bigger scale,” adds Lights, who, with this latest project, is certainly practicing what she preaches.
