Soul Sisters got to catch up with country star and songwriting phenom Brandy Clark during her New York tour stop just two days before the 2018 Grammys — a ceremony she knows a little about as a six-time nominee, including nods for best new artist and best country album when she crossed over from behind the pen to behind the mic in 2015.
“I always watched the Grammys but that was a world I didn’t know much about,” she tells us, before “the Grammys decided I was their girl and that was really nice!”
We also ask Clark about her decision to be open — but not particularly vocal — about her sexuality (she was already out as a lesbian when she made her first record and, as she notes, “anybody who comes out of the closet does not go back in it — it’s a terrible place”) and what it would take for her to become more outspoken in today’s political climate.
“I don’t throw my sexuality in people’s faces, but if gay and lesbian rights were taken away, or people were being real oppressed, I would definitely stand up. I wouldn’t be quiet then,” she vows.
