Welcome to the new episode of the Billboard.com Pop Shop Podcast, Billboard’s weekly audio breakdown of the Billboard charts, hottest music news and year’s biggest musical events. Casual pop fans and chart junkies can hear Billboard co-director of charts Keith Caulfield and Billboard.com senior editor Katie Atkinson every Tuesday on the Pop Shop Podcast, which can be streamed on Billboard.com or downloaded in iTunes (click here to listen to the previous Tuesday’s edition of the show on Billboard.com).
Our guests on this week’s show are New Kids on the Block! We chatted with four-fifths of the veteran boy band (you were missed, Donnie!) as they kicked off their Total Package Tour with Boyz II Men and Paula Abdul. We talked all about their latest all-star lineup, the best and worst parts of being on the road, and what it’s like to play new songs from their Thankful EP on the tour. (Read more about their tour here and listen to the interview below.)
We also asked the guys who is still on their tourmate wish list, after hitting the road with everyone from TLC to the Backstreet Boys. “I think there’s one big one left that we’ve always thought it would be a dream come true if it worked out,” Joey McIntyre said. “I guess it’s no secret that growing up, being from Boston, and New Edition being from Boston, and looking up to those guys. But again, you’re looking at six other guys, five or six other guys, and it’s tough. It’s really gotta be in the stars. So who knows if that’s a possibility? But … we’re just so lucky to have Boyz II Men again, and Paula Abdul — it’s really kind of like the perfect night. So we’ll enjoy this one, and it’s gonna be tough to figure out that [next] perfect act, but we’ve been lucky over the years to find the right fit.”
NKOTB’s Total Package Tour resumes Tuesday night (June 6) in Portland, Oregon, and continues through July 16 in Hollywood, Florida.
Also on this week’s show, we’ve got news about Fifth Harmony‘s first post-Camila Cabello single, “Down,” Liam Payne‘s new video for “Strip That Down,” and the One Love Manchester charity concert this past Sunday. Plus, we’ve got chart updates about a new No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart from Bryson Tiller, a return to the top five from The Beatles, how Halsey is heading for her first No. 1 album, and a look at how some of the front-runners at this Sunday’s Tony Awards have performed on the chart.
