Welcome to the new episode of the Billboard.com Pop Shop Podcast, Billboard’s weekly audio breakdown of the Billboard charts, hottest music news and year’s biggest musical events. Casual pop fans and chart junkies can hear Billboard co-director of charts Keith Caulfield and Billboard.com senior editor Katie Atkinson every Tuesday on the Pop Shop Podcast, which can be streamed on Billboard.com or downloaded in iTunes (click here to listen to the previous Tuesday’s edition of the show on Billboard.com).
This week on the show, we have U.K. singer Kyla, who is featured on Drake‘s megahit “One Dance.” Kyla got the surprise of a lifetime back in the spring when Team Drake called out of the blue to ask to sample her 2009 track “Do You Mind” on a mystery song. Her life changed nearly overnight when the sample turned into a feature and the song became Drake’s first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 as a lead artist — and stayed at the top for 10 weeks. She tells us all about how the sample came to be, her interactions with Drake since, her “surreal” post-“One Dance” life (including a new collaboration with Naughty Boy), and her plans for a full-length album.
We also asked her about the possibility of a Grammy nomination before nominees were officially revealed — and thanks to Drake’s album of the year nod for Views, Kyla is officially up for her first Grammy. To wrap up 2016, Kyla is No. 88 on our year-end Hot 100 Artists chart and “One Dance” is the year-end No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, thanks to the song’s record 18 weeks at No. 1.
Plus, we’ve got chart chat about The Hamilton Mixtape hitting the top of the Billboard 200 and how The Rolling Stones earn their record-extending 37th top 10 album on the chart. And over on the Hot 100, we talk about Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello shooting into the top 10 with “Bad Things” and chat about just how big Zayn and Taylor Swift‘s new Fifty Shades Darker song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” will be on the chart.
