Welcome to the new episode of the Billboard.com Pop Shop Podcast, Billboard’s weekly audio breakdown of the Billboard charts, hottest music news and year’s biggest musical events. Casual pop fans and chart junkies can hear Billboard co-director of charts Keith Caulfield and Billboard.com senior editor Katie Atkinson every Tuesday on the Pop Shop Podcast, which can be streamed on Billboard.com or downloaded in iTunes (click here to listen to the previous Tuesday’s edition of the show on Billboard.com).
This week on the show we’ve got an interview with Alessia Cara! The singer/songwriter made her Billboard Hot 100 debut back in August 2015 with “Here,” which eventually climbed all the way to No. 5 this past February — and it hit No. 1 on the Pop Songs airplay chart that same month. The 20-year-old followed it up with another Hot 100 hit “Wild Things,” a collaboration with Troye Sivan on a remix of “Wild” and now her new single “Scars to Your Beautiful,” which recently hit the top 10 on the Pop Songs chart.
In our discussion with Cara, we talk about “Scars,” the whirlwind year she’s had since releasing her debut album back in November 2015, her new song for the Moana soundtrack, and how she’s been careful and purposely choosy about her career opportunities over the past year.
“I made it a point at the beginning [of my career] to tell everyone that I would rather do things slowly and in the right way than just quickly and put everything out and then just end up in a bad place,” Cara says. “And my team has been really awesome with that. I think we know not only what to say ‘yes’ to, but what to say ‘no’ to, which is very important, because if something doesn’t feel right then there’s no point in doing it, for all of us. So I think that’s why, thankfully, up until now, we’ve had the success that we’ve had.
“It’s so fulfilling and a lot better because it’s through doing things that I really love and that are really true to me and honest to me. I’ve never felt like I was put in a place where I just didn’t want to do something or something felt uncomfortable or wrong. I think that’s why things have just worked, because it’s always been authentic to who I am.”
Plus, in addition to our chat with Cara, we’ve got chart chat about a rockin’ new No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart from Metallica, how Bruno Mars and Miranda Lambert fly in with their latest releases at the top of the list, how The Weeknd should bow at No. 1 next week with his new Starboy set, and Billboard Hot 100 news about Fifth Harmony and one of its members, Camila Cabello!
