Even if most of this year’s major albums are behind us, the last week saw an inordinate amount of great new releases.
We got the first new Frank Ocean song in absolutely forever, an incredible Tinashe track with a DJ Mustard beat and a hilarious A$AP Ferg/Big Sean collaboration called “Ja Rule.” Speaking of Ferg, he stopped by the latest Juice podcast to talk about Madonna’s tea-making skills, so you should check that out right here.
In the rock world, St. Vincent unleashed a David Byrne-esque new single for Record Store Black Friday and Pennsylvania post-punks Title Fight teased the first song from their upcoming third.

Gwen Stefani, “Spark the Fire”
Joe: This reminds me of the bad material Pharrell produced for Madonna’s Hard Candy album. Sparse, awkward pop.
Jason: I’m totally disheartened after this and “Baby Don’t Lie.” We have two mediocre Gwen Stefani songs, and two horrible music videos.
Frank Ocean, “Memrise”
Joe: As much as Channel Orange was Stevie Wonder, Frank Ocean is saying the next album will be Brian Wilson. And this sketch of a song has a meditative, dreamy, bedroom pop vibe.
Erika: I’m not that excited with it, but I’m looking at it like a snippet. It seems just like proof that yes, he is actually working on a new album.
Jason: It’s interesting that the first new music we’re getting from him in forever is just 1:57 on Tumblr. It’s not good or bad, just fascinating.
Tinashe, “F—in’ Wit Me”
(This song has been removed from Audiomack)
Joe: This is more swagger from her than most of what’s on Aquarius. It’s almost Rihanna-esque at points, but it’s great to hear attitude from her.
Jason: Do you guys think this is a female response song to Big Sean’s “I Don’t F— With You”? That’s kind of a misogynistic song, and this seems like a potential response to it.
Erika: I do not think that.
A$AP Ferg ft. Big Sean, “Ja Rule”
Joe: First things first, I love that it’s called “Ja Rule” and it has a sample of Ja Rule’s 2000 hit “Put It On Me” on it.
Erika: Ferg stopped by the office to play some of his Ferg Forever mixtape, and I had to listen to this song twice. It’s really funny and I like that Ferg actually sings on it.
Jason: I love this song, and I just want to say that Ferg is one of the nicest rappers you’ll ever meet.
You can download Ferg Forever here.
St. Vincent, “Pieta”
Joe: St. Vincent’s self-titled from this year is far and away my favorite album of the year. This is new Record Store Black Friday song and it’s a little bit of My Life In the Bush of Ghosts, which makes sense since she’s worked with David Byrne before.
Jason: I’m not a huge St. Vincent fan, but I did actually like this song. And I think it’s because of the Talking Heads vibe.
Title Fight, “Chlorine”
Jason: I was blown away by how gorgeous this is. It’s in the Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth mode of careening guitars, but it’s really got this beautiful melody within.
Joe: Yeah, it reminded me of the early post-punk material from Siouxsie Sioux & the Banshees. The guitars have that lovely clanging noise.
