
If you like disco — or any kind of music that makes you want to get up and dance — you’ve got to check out Monika. That’s a massive swath of people, and rightfully so; the Greek artist’s first American album is a catchy, infectious delight. She was just as engaging on this week’s podcast.
“I don’t want to be recognized by face… sometimes it feels like prison,” Monika boldly stated. She’s not about the tabloid spotlight, but she’s built a strong following in Greece and abroad, identifying with the alternative side of music, the “weird ones,” as she says. Still, she gave a compelling look at popular music in her homeland, and balancing her native tongue with singing in English.

Monika’s new album, Secret in the Dark, was produced by the Dap-Kings’ Homer Steinweiss and dropped Oct. 2 on Other Music, the label arm of the veteran New York record shop of the same name. For a sampling of her sound, check out the title track:
