Billboard‘s 2019 Songs of the Summer chart is only in its second week, but we’re already wondering: Can any song gallop in and take this year’s cowboy crown from Lil Nas X’s wildly dominant “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus?
The answer is… maybe.
Last year, for instance, the eventual 2018 Song of the Summer — Drake‘s “In My Feelings” — wasn’t even on the chart when the seasonal tally launched in early June. (The initial No. 1 on the ’18 chart was actually a different Drake song: “Nice for What.”) So if “In My Feelings” was able to take the crown without a full summer on the chart, anything could happen before we announce this year’s champ around Labor Day.
On this week’s Billboard Pop Shop Podcast (listen below), we take a look at some possible contenders already making an impact on the Hot 100 — Billie Eilish‘s “Bad Guy” (No. 2), DaBaby‘s “Suge” (No. 8), Shawn Mendes‘ “If I Can’t Have You” (No. 14), Katy Perry‘s “Never Really Over” (No. 15), Cardi B‘s “Press” (No. 16) and Luke Combs‘ “Beer Never Broke My Heart” (No. 38) — plus some songs waiting in the wings that could make a splash, like Kane Brown‘s “Short Skirt Weather” or Chris Brown‘s “No Guidance,” featuring summer stalwart Drake. Or maybe we haven’t even heard the song yet, with Taylor Swift and Rihanna both teasing new music on the horizon, and even Lil Nas X has an EP of potential new viral hits coming this month.
